Parmesan Onion Ring Chips are savory and crispy, made with onions baked on a sheet pan with parmesan and seasoning, ready in 20 minutes!

A hand dipping an onion ring chip into a small bowl of sriracha aioli, on a sheet pan of more chips topped with chopped green onion.

This is one of my all-time favorite snacks that’s definitely going to solve your onion ring cravings! They’re salty with an incredible savory flavor and crispy texture, and can even take the place of traditional chips. Plus they’re really easy to make, using only a layer of cheese, onion, then cheese and baked until crispy. This is seriously the fastest batch of onion rings you’ll ever make!

EASY to make. These onion ring crisps are so incredibly easy to make! If you can slice an onion, then you can make these chips. It’s the perfect simple snack idea!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Individual ingredients for parmesan onion ring chips on a table.

Onions. This recipe works best with a large white onion, the same kind you’d use for traditional onion rings.

You can also use other onion varieties, like a yellow onion, but you may end up with smaller chips. A Vidalia onion would also work, but would also have more natural sweetness than other varieties.

To speed up the onion slicing, you can use a mandolin, just be very careful when using it!

Parmesan. Grated or shredded parmesan cheese works for this recipe. You’ll get the best flavor if you use a parmesan block that you shred yourself. But pre-grated cheese will also work.

Spices. You can use any spices you’d like for this recipe, but I like to season with pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

You can also try my Homemade Ranch Seasoning, or this Italian Seasoning.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil. You can use olive oil or avocado oil cooking spray, or brush the olive oil on the rings.

How to Make Parmesan Onion Ring Chips

Time needed: 20 minutes

  1. Prep your baking sheet.

Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Sprinkle half of the parmesan evenly over the sheet pan. Slice the onion into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Place the onion slices in a single layer on top of the parmesan. Sprinkle the seasonings evenly over the onion ring slices, then lightly spray each one with olive oil. A sheet pan with parchment paper, with onion slices on top of shredded parmesan in a single layer, topped with seasoning before baking.

  2. Add remaining Parmesan.

Add the remaining parmesan on top, making sure to cover each of the onion rings evenly. A sheet pan with parchment paper with a layer of shredded parmesan, then onion slices, then seasoning and olive oil, and a final layer of parmesan before baking.

  3. Bake until crispy.

Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Cut or break into pieces and serve. A parchment lined sheet pan with baked parmesan onion ring chips before being cut into pieces, topped with chopped green onion.

Recipe Variations

  • Try adding some cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to give this a spicy twist!
  • If you want a stretchy cheese pull, mix the top layer of parmesan with some mozzarella cheese.
  • Try this with other veggies, like smashed broccoli, potatoes, or zucchini.

Recipe Tip! I like to use a pizza cutter to cut the onion rings apart once they’ve cooled a little bit. It’s fast and easy!

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my parmesan chips aren’t crispy?

If your onion rings aren’t crispy, try leaving them in the oven for a few more minutes. If you’re not seeing that golden brown caramelized look, turn the broiler on for 1-2 minutes, watching closely so the crispy cheese layer doesn’t burn.

Recipe Tip! Serve this with your favorite dipping sauce. Try mixing 1/2 cup mayo with a tablespoon of sriracha and a squeeze of lemon juice for a sriracha aioli.

Cooking Tips

  • You can grease your baking sheet, but I really recommend using a sheet of parchment paper to make it non-stick instead. It will work a lot better for this recipe.
  • I use 1-2 large onions for this recipe, or for the smaller side you’d need 2-3 onions.
