Air Fryer Chickpeas are the perfect healthy snack, made with canned chickpeas tossed in olive oil and spices, then air fried until crispy, ready in 20 minutes!

A bowl on a table with crispy air fryer chickpeas coated in seasoning.

These crispy air fryer chickpeas are the perfect snack, made with canned chickpeas coated with olive oil and your favorite seasoning, then air fried until crispy and delicious. I love these because they have minimal prep time, work with almost any spice mix, and are a high fiber snack.

These chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans) work on their own, added to a rice bowl, instead of croutons in a soup, or as a salad topper. This is basically the air fryer version of roasted chickpeas, and comes out just as good, maybe even better! Plus the air fryer method is less cleanup and is ready faster than the oven method.

Ingredients Youโ€™ll Need

Individual ingredients for air fryer chickpeas on a table.

Chickpeas. I use canned chickpeas, because they are already cooked through. If you use dried chickpeas, you would have to cook them before using them in this recipe.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil. This helps the seasoning stick to the chickpeas and be evenly distributed. You can also use avocado oil or canola oil.

Spices. I gave a really basic seasoning blend in this recipe that I like to use for a lot of different recipes. Just some onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. You can use whatever your favorite seasoning is for this recipe.

For this recipe, you’ll need an air fryer with a basket, and a colander to rinse the chickpeas.

Recipe Variations

  • Make these garbanzo beans spicy by adding a dash of hot sauce, cayenne pepper, or red pepper flakes.
  • You can add any seasoning blend that you’d like, try garlic and parmesan, curry powder, or chili powder. Or try a sweet version with cinnamon sugar or brown sugar and maple syrup. If you use a sweet blend, watch them closely so the sugar doesn’t burn.
  • Add more time to make them more crispy. Just keep an eye on them so they don’t burn.

Recipe Tip! You can also make oven roasted chickpeas on a baking sheet! Season with olive oil and spices, then spread them out on a baking sheet (lined with parchment paper) in a single layer. Bake at 375ยฐF for 30-40 minutes, or until crispy, stirring with a spatula about half way through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to use canned chickpeas in the air fryer?

In general, whether you’re air frying or roasting them in the oven, you have to use canned chickpeas. This is because the canned version is already fully cooked. If you’re going to use dried chickpeas, you would have to fully cook them first before you could safely roast them.

Storage

Refrigerate leftover chickpeas in an airtight container for 3-4 days.

They can lose their crunch over time. If this happens, just throw them back into the air fryer for a few minutes. They’re best when made the same day they’re eaten, so I don’t like to keep them for more than a few days.

Cooking Tips

  • When air frying the chickpeas, you want them to be crispy when they’re done. You can add more cook time as-needed until they reach this texture.
  • If you want extra crispy chickpeas, gently rub the skin off of them before seasoning and cooking. This extra step isn’t completely necessary, but will give you the best texture.
  • If you want to keep it a little lighter, you can lightly coat with cooking spray instead of using more olive oil, then sprinkle the spice mix onto the garbanzo beans. Top with 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper to taste at the very end.
