Pina Colada Smoothie
Pina Colada Smoothie made with tropical flavors like crushed pineapple and coconut milk blended with vanilla greek yogurt, banana, and lime juice, ready in under 5 minutes!
This is the perfect twist on a tropical cocktail, with the classic flavors of a pina colada but made with wholesome ingredients like fruit, coconut milk, and yogurt. Unlike the actual cocktail, this will be a twist on virgin pina coladas! If you want some more sweetness, you can add a tablespoon of maple syrup or honey.
Because I’m making this smoothie for breakfast, I try to keep it on the lighter side. I like to use canned pineapple in 100% fruit juice (instead of syrup), or cut up a fresh pineapple if I have time, and throw in a handful of ice to keep it cold. You can also use frozen pineapple, so you’ll always have the ingredients on hand!
I try my best to eat 1-2 different types of fruit during the day, and this smoothie has pineapple and banana in it, making this an easy goal! My other favorite breakfast smoothies are this Dragon Fruit Smoothie, and if I need more veggies that day I’ll make one of my favorite green smoothies like this Green Monster Smoothie or Kale Protein Smoothie.

Ingredients Youโll Need
Pineapple.ย This is one of two main ingredients in a pina colada. It adds flavor and sweetness, along with nutrition. I use canned pineapple, because I always have it in my pantry. Fresh pineapple chunks will also work, just remove the peel and core the pineapple first.
Coconut Milk.ย This is the other traditional flavor in a pina colada. This recipe calls for canned full-fat coconut milk, because it has a more creamy texture and coconut flavor.
This would also work with other plant-based milks like almond milk, and a small amount of coconut flavoring (coconut extract) or shredded coconut / unsweetened coconut flakes.
Banana. This works with a large to medium banana. This is added for sweetness and also helps thicken and make the smoothie more creamy. Use a ripe banana for stronger banana flavor and extra sweetness, depending on your personal taste.
If you have bananas that are getting too ripe, try peeling and freezing the banana pieces. Adding frozen fruit to smoothies adds a nice frozen texture. Make sure you peel them first, because it is difficult to remove the peel from frozen banana chunks.
Vanilla Greek Yogurt. I like to add vanilla yogurt because the vanilla balances out the flavor profile, and the greek yogurt adds a nice texture and some nutrition to the smoothie.ย
Use a gluten-free vegan yogurt for a dairy-free smoothie.ย
Fresh Lime Juice. A squeeze of lime juice can add a bright fresh flavor to fruit smoothies.
Ice Cubes. I like smoothies when they’re cold. You can also freeze the pineapple and banana beforehand for a frozen smoothie.

How to Make A Pina Colada Smoothie
Time needed: 5 minutes
- Add all ingredients.
Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
- Adjust as-needed.
ย Add additional coconut milk or pineapple juice as-needed for flavor and texture.ย Garnish with pineapple wedges if desired.
Recipe Variations
- Try using fresh pineapple instead of canned for an even better flavor.
- For additional sweetness, add a small amount of grenadine. This will also turn the smoothie a bright red color.
- Add other fresh fruits like mango, cherries, or orange slices for more delicious flavor combinations.
- For less calories, you can use light coconut milk. But the texture won’t be as smooth as full-fat canned coconut milk.ย ย
- Make this really refreshing with a handful of fresh mint leaves.
- Add a scoop of vanilla protein powder for a protein boost.
- Make this a little thicker by prepping your ingredients in advance by freezing the pineapple and banana pieces. Using frozen ingredients will help keep the smoothie cold and have a thicker texture.
- Add a handful of spinach to get in some extra greens.
Recipe Tip! Top the smoothie with a fresh piece of pineapple, sweetened shredded coconut or toasted coconut flakes, and a maraschino cherry for decoration!
Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re looking for more of a sweet treat, try using canned pineapple in syrup instead of pineapple juice. You can also add a small amount of honey, brown sugar, maple syrup, or simple syrup to the smoothie for sweetness.ย
Technically, you could add fresh coconut to this smoothie, but it might not blend as well as canned coconut milk would. You would need a really good high-powered blender to get a nice smooth texture. If you don’t mind some coconut pieces in your smoothie, then it may be fine.ย
Recipe Tip! Make this a frozen smoothie for hot summer days! Try adding frozen banana and frozen pineapple. Make sure to peel the banana before freezing. You can usually find frozen pineapple chunks in the grocery store.

- If your smoothie is too thin, you can add another handful of ice, more pineapple, or more banana. ย
